Throughout the world, people are embracing family traditions and exploring their ancestry. This is true in the Jewish world as well, where more people are reverting back to their faith and renewing their interest in their traditional cultures.
The increased curiosity about the history, culture, and religion of Syria in particular has stemmed from its various prominent social and political involvements in the international community. Aromas of Aleppo -- The Legendary Cuisine of Syrian Jews by Poopa Dweck allows readers to visit this country in its truest form and see its society and culture beyond the surface of war and oppression.
Dweck, a first generation Syrian-Jewish American, has devoted much of her life to preserving and celebrating the centuries-old legacy that accompanied her ancestors to the United States in the early 1900s when they migrated from the ancient city of Aleppo in historic Syria.
She is honored to be receiving the "Woman of Achievement" award from the National Women's Division of the American Committee for Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. The presentation will be held at Sotheby's, New York, on Thursday, June 11, 2009. For more information, call 212-764-8117.
In Aromas of Aleppo, cooks of all persuasions can discover Dweck's most time-honored recipes, which range from maza (small delights) to daily meals and regal holiday feasts, including the traditional Passover seder. Featured in the New York Times Magazine and winner of the National Jewish Book Award in 2007, Aromas of Aleppo features dishes both familiar and exotic and documents a peoples' culture as well as its cuisine.
